This page provides instructions on how to update the firmware for Personal Audio System SRS-ZR5 to version 4.04.

Benefits of Update:

This software update also include previous update benefits and improvements:

  • Added Voice guidance for Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Support Spotify Playback via Chromecast built-in.
  • Added Multi Room function via Google Cast.
  • Support music playback from SCMS-T devices via Bluetooth during Wireless Stereo/Wireless Surround Function.
  • Improve operation stability.

How to check Firmware Version

Note: If the version is displayed as 4.04, you do not need to update the firmware.

You can check the firmware version using either the following methods:

How to check using SONY | Music Center (Songpal) Application

  1. Connect the unit to same network as smartphone with SONY | Music Center (Songpal) application via WiFi router device.

  2. Start up SONY | Music Center (Songpal) Application on your smart-phone.

  3. Select “SRS-ZR5 xxxxxx”

  4. Select “Settings”

  5. Select “Other Settings”

  6. Confirm SRS-ZR5 Version

How to check using a personal computer

  1. Connect the unit to the PC with a LAN cable (not supplied).
    Note: Connect the speaker to a PC directly with the LAN cable.

  2. Connect the speaker to an AC outlet and AC power cord (supplied) securely.
    Tap the (on/standby) button, then turning power on.
    Wait until the LINK indicator stops flashing and stays lit in pink for about 4 minutes.

  3. Display Sony Network Device Settings on your PC.
    Launch a browser and enter "http://169.254.1.1" in the address bar.

  4. "X.XX.YYYY" is the Version on the [System Software Version].

How to Update

There are two methods, please click the link below for instructions.

  1. Network Update
  2. USB Update

Network Update Instructions

To perform Software Update via internet (network) connection. Please check the following steps.

Note: You cannot update to the latest software, if the set is NOT connected to the internet (network).

  1. Connect to the internet (network).
        
    1. Connecting by Ethernet
    2. Connecting by SONY | Music Center (Songpal) of smartphone App
    3. Connecting by WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)
    4. Connecting by PC

  2. When the speaker is turning power on, Press the (on/standby) button, and turning power off.
    Connect the supplied AC power adapter to the unit and AC power plug to AC outlet.

  3. Press the (on/standby) button, then turning power on.

  4. Wait until the LINK indicator stops flashing and stays lit in orange.
    Whenever a software update becomes available, the UPDATE indicator lights up.

  5. Press and hold the UPDATE/WPS button until beeps are heard.
    When the latest software update starts, the UPDATE indicator flashes.

    Note: The speaker is not operational while updating.

  6. The UPDATE indicator changes the blinking (interval and condition) by the update progress.

    Note: Updating normally takes about 3 to 10 minutes. It may take more time depending on your network environment.

  7. The UPDATE indicator turns off and the speaker switches to standby mode or BLUETOOTH/Network standby mode automatically after updating is completed.

  8. Check the firmware version here.

    If all function LEDs are lit up
    Software update failed. Press the (on/standby) button to turn off the speaker, then turn on again.
    Make sure the speaker is connected to the internet and the UPDATE indicator is lit, then start updating again.

    Note:
    • Keep the speaker connected to the power supply and network while updating.
    • DO NOT remove the AC power adaptor until completing the update.
    • DO NOT power off during the update.

    UPDATE button is lighted in Orange
    The Software update is NOT completed, but the Speaker is in normal condition. 
    Turn the speaker OFF again and update the firmware using a USB flash device by using method 1.

    Indicator flashes in red and UPDATE button flashes in orange
    (Same as the condition before Power OFF/ON)
    The Software update has FAILED, and the Speaker cannot be used. 
    Turn the speaker OFF again, and update the firmware using a USB flash device by using method 2.

USB Update Instructions

To perform Software Update via USB connection. Please check the following steps.

Note: It is impossible to be back to the previous software version after software update.

  1. Preparations for Firmware Update
    Before downloading the firmware, please ensure that your computer is running one of the following operating systems and prepare USB flash drive.

    Supported Operating Systems
    • Windows 10
    • Windows 8 / 8.1
    • Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    • Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    • Mac OS X (10.6) or later

    Note:
    • If you are using Windows 8, please use it in desktop mode.
    • Operation is not guaranteed for all PCs installed with a compatible OS.
    • USB flash drive Capacity: larger than 256MB
      Note: Operation is not guaranteed for all USB flash drive.

  2. Download the Update File
    Make sure no program other than your Internet browser is running.
    Save the file to the Desktop of your computer (recommended).

    Note: This is the dedicated update file for SRS-ZR5 only. You cannot use this file with other Personal Audio System.

  3. Prepare USB flash drive
    Note: Initialized the USB flash drive by the original manufacturer system.

  4. Copy the Update file (downloaded file) to the USB flash drive
    Insert the initialized (formatted) the USB flash drive into the USB slot on your computer and copy the update file to the root of the USB flash drive.
USB flash drive Upgrade Instructions (Method 1)
  1. Connect the speaker to an AC outlet with the AC power cord (supplied) securely.
    Press the (on/standby) button, turning power on.
    After the POWER indicator lights green, insert the USB flash drive to USB slot of the speaker.

  2. Press and hold UPDATE/WPS button, and immediately tap and hold FUNCTION button. Then keep the both buttons pressing for 4 seconds until beeps are heard.

    Note: When the speaker connects to the network, UPDATE indicator might be lit in orange.

  3. USB update starts, the UPDATE indicator flashes in orange.
    Note: While updating, the speaker cannot be operated.

  4. The UPDATE indicator changes the blinking (interval and condition) by the update progress.

    Note: POWER indicator will blink too.

  5. The UPDATE indicator turns off and the speaker enters to the standby mode or BLUETOOTH/Network standby mode automatically when the updating is completed.

    Note: When you turn on the speaker for the first time after an update, the UPDATE indicator flashes in orange three times.

  6. Check the firmware version here.

USB flash drive Upgrade Instructions (Method 2)

  1. Turn the speaker off again.
    After turning off the speaker, complete the following steps within three minutes before turning the power on again .

  2. Connect the USB flash drive to the USB-A port on the rear of the speaker.

  3. Turn the speaker on.
    The UPDATE indicator flashes and the update starts automatically.
    Note: While updating, the speaker cannot be operated.

  4. The UPDATE indicator changes the blinking (interval and condition) by the update progress.

    Note: POWER indicator will blink too.

  5. The UPDATE indicator turns off and the speaker enters to the standby mode or BLUETOOTH/Network standby mode automatically when the updating is completed.

    Note: When you turn on the speaker for the first time after an update, the UPDATE indicator flashes in orange three times.

  6. Check the firmware version here.

Note

  • The number of flashes of the UPDATE indicator will change according to the update’s progress. The UPDATE indicator will flash four times at first, and decreas by one flash, then turns off when updating is completed.
  • Keep the speaker connected to the power supply while updating.
  • DO NOT remove the AC adaptor until completing the update.
  • DO NOT power off the power during the update.
  • Updating normally takes 3 to 10 minutes.
