Firmware refers to the operational software that is embedded in the Walkman. This utility will upgrade the Firmware to Version 1.11.

Target Model:

  • NWZ-S736F/S738F/S739F

Resolved Symptoms: With the above products, customers may experience the following symptoms. The symptoms will be fixed with this firmware update.

  • When playing any music files, sometimes the units cannot be operated, and then, may turn off and on automatically.

Target Firmware:

  • The firmware version of the following products should be less than or equal to 1.10.

Verifying the Model and Firmware Version: Please confirm the Model and the Firmware version from the steps below.

  1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
  2. Press   /  /  /  button to select   (Settings), and then press  button.
  3. Press   /  /  /   button to select Common Settings, and then press  button.
  4. Press   /  /  /   button to select Unit Information, and then press   button.
    Confirm the Model and the Firmware version.

  • Log on with Administrator user name when installing this update program.
  • If you are Windows Vista user, “Windows needs your permission to continue” message appears in the User Account Control dialog box. Click Continue to proceed, and follow the announcements.

Details

Download procedure

  1. Set up the folder for storing the downloaded file on the hard disk. 
    Assuming the folder is named FWUP and is created in C drive.
  2. Save the downloaded file NWZ-S730F_V1_11.exe (28,558 KB) in this folder.
  3. When the download is completed, use Windows Explorer to browse to the folder where the file is saved. Click View and then click Details.
    * If the file size is the same as the download size (28,558 KB) the download is successful. If the size is different, please delete the file and download it again.

Update Preparation

Note:

  • During this update process, the unit requires a minimum of 30MB of free space.
  • Please transfer all tracks and data from the unit to the computer before carrying out the firmware update.
  • It cannot be guaranteed that during the update process, the tracks and data stored in the unit would not be damaged or deleted.

Preparation (Setting initialization of the "Walkman")

By the initialization, all the contents including some setting menus and FM radio broadcast stations preset you set optionally are reset to the default, factory settings, but data of music, photos and movies are not deleted.

  1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
  2. Press  /  /  /  button to select   (Settings), and then press  button.
  3. Press  /  /  /   button to select Common Settings, and then press  button.
  4. Press the  /  /  /  button to select Reset all Settings, and then press the  button to confirm.  The confirmation screen to set back to the factory settings appears.
  5. Press the  /  button to select Yes and then press    button to confirm. Restored factory settings appears.

 Update Procedure

  1. After the preparation, connect the Walkman  to the PC.
    * If using a notebook PC, keep an AC adapter connected to the PC to ensure the PC battery stays charged.
  2. Quit all software running on Windows, and complete any other works besides the update.
    * If some other Digital Music Players are connected to the computer, disconnect all of them from the computer.
  3. Windows Vista users: Click Start button on the task bar of the computer, and click on "Run..." followed by All Programs -> Accessory.
    Windows XP users: Click Start button on the task bar of the computer and click on
    "Run..."   The "Run..." dialog box will be opened.
  4. Type C:\FWUP\NWZ-S730F_V1_11.exe in the Open text box and click OK. The firmware update program will be started.
  5. Follow the on-screen message.
    * Please do not disconnect the unit from the PC during updating.
    * During updating, USB connection is automatically controlled and "Connecting USB" indication is off with the control. Also, the USB disconnect message may appear on some computers.
  6. When the message of completing updating is displayed, click Finish button.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: Computer shows "The update data file cannot be transferred because there is not enough available disk space in the device."
    Solution: Delete some songs in the unit, or transfer to PC to available disk space more than 30MB. Then, start to update, again.
  • Problem: Computer shows "The software update of the NWZ-S636F (or NWZ-S638F, NWZ-S639F, NWZ-S736F, NWZ-S738F, NWZ-S739F) device to version 1.11 timed out."
    Solution: The update may have failed. Click Finish. Follow the Update procedure and retry to update.

Firmware Update Verification

  • Please confirm the firmware version when the upgrade program is completed. The update program installation is successful when firmware version 1.11 is shown on the screen.
  1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
  2. Press   /  /  /  button to select   (Settings), and then press  button.
  3. Press   /  /  /   button to select Common Settings, and then press  button.
  4. Press   /  /  /   button to select Unit Information, and then press   button.
  5. Confirm the Firmware version is displaying 1.11.

Note: Please consult the local authorized Sony service facility for assistance with the Firmware Update if there are any problems.
